Protestors shut down several busy streets in Washington, D.C., on Monday to urge government action on climate change, using the opportunity to label six associations within the city as "climate criminals" for their opposition to many environmental regulations.
A host of groups physically blocked several intersections and streets as part of the "Shut Down DC" protest, which was held in conjunction with the opening of a U.N. climate summit in New York City the same day. They also released an online interactive map of the District showing the locations of several trade associations and "dirty energy companies" the protestors say are blocking legislative action on climate change.
"The coalition's demands include a Green New Deal that brings about a swift and just transition to 100% renewable energy," the groups said in a joint statement. "It also wants governments to protect at least 50% of the world's lands and oceans, and to halt deforestation by 2030.
"The coalition is also calling for climate justice for everyone," they added. "The transition to a clean future must boost rather than further harm communities hit by poverty and pollution."
The associations singled out by the protestors were:
- U.S. Chamber of Commerce
- National Association of Manufacturers
- American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity
- Independent Petroleum Association of America
- American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers
- American Petroleum Institute
Despite the label, none of the association headquarters appear to have been targeted for protests.
